NEW YORK (WABC) -- Thousands of cyclists hit the streets of New York Sunday morning for the 39th annual Five Boro Bike Tour.

The 40-mile route takes cyclists from Lower Manhattan up to the Bronx, then into Queens and Brooklyn, and finally over the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge into Staten Island.

Organizers reminded participants that no bags were allowed except for the small ones attached to bikes.

32,000 cyclists of all skills levels from around the world didn't let Sunday morning's rain stop them as they got ready to roll through the streets of the city.

The TD Five Boro Bike Tour Presented by REI is the largest charitable bike ride in the U.S., with proceeds funding Bike New York for free bike education programs.

Last year, Bike New York taught bike skills to more than 17,000 kids and adults.
