MTA testing technology to bring Wi-Fi to subway cars

The MTA is conducting a first test of possible technology that could one day bring Wi-Fi to cars in the city's subway system.

The technology is currently being tested in four subway cars along the E line. Testing will continue through June 7.

The testing is the first step in the Transit Authority's long promised goal for trains to enter the Internet age.

After this first phase of testing is completed, the MTA will evaluate the results and move forward.

The agency could not offer a timetable of when the technology would be available on trains, but subway stations are not expected to be wired for Internet and cell phone service until at least the end of next year.
