1 at large, 1 fatally shot by police after Bensonhurst home invasion

BENSONHURST, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police are still looking for a second man they say was involved in a Brooklyn home invasion Monday night that ended with a police-involved shooting and a second suspect dead.

Authorities say a family of eight was held in their Bensonhurst home by the two men. One of those suspects -- identified as 39-year-old Orville Edwards -- tried to get away but was confronted by responding officers. He allegedly pointed a gun in their direction, prompting them to open fire.

The officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress at the home on 78th Street around 6:45 p.m.

Investigators say two armed men entered the house posing as construction workers, both wearing uniforms and hard hats. When they got inside, they reportedly pulled their guns and rounded up residents of the home, including seven adults and a baby. They then allegedly began ransacking the place.

Edwards kicked out an air conditioner and ran down the fire escape in an effort to flee, authorities said, but he instead ran into the officers. He was shot and killed at the scene, while the second suspect escaped.

"Right after the gunshot, the other guy wearing the construction vest ran this way," one witness said, with her neighbor translating. "Nobody chased after him."

Edwards was linked to at least six robberies in 1995 and served 16 years in state prison before being released in 2014. He was on parole until 2035.

Police are actively searching for his accomplice, a man in his 30s who is described as heavy-set. They are also canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance video.
