LOWER MANHATTAN (WABC) -- At least 14 people were pepper sprayed in a disturbance Wednesday at the Manhattan Detention Complex.

Correction officers released the spray at the municipal jail on White Street in Lower Manhattan.

There is no word yet on whether those who were pepper sprayed were prisoners, correction officers or both.

It is not yet clear what sparked the incident.

Several ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

All the patients were taken to New York Downtown Hospital and Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries.

The detention center, run by the city's Department of Correction, is a facility where prisoners wait for trial or are taken when they are to appear in court.

It is attached to the Manhattan Criminal Court complex on Centre Street.
