Arrest made in East Harlem attempted sex assault

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- A man has been arrested in connection with the attempted sexual assault of a child as she slept in her Manhattan home.

Juan Barreto, 27, of New York City, was charged with attempted rape, burglary and endangering the welfare of a child.

Just after 11 p.m. on July 7, in the vicinity of East 108th Street and First Avenue in East Harlem, authorities said an 8-year-old girl was asleep in her home. She was awakened by a man who attempted to sexually assault her. The suspect fled through a bedroom window and out a rear fire escape.

The girl was not injured.
