Up Close: Concerns about the Zika virus

NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City is stepping up efforts to try to detect any local transmission of the Zika virus, after the first known person to person transmissions of the virus in the United States.

It happened in Miami. So just how concerned should we be about Zika in our area?

We ask one of the top experts in New York City's Health Department. Joining us is Dr. Jay Varma, the department's Deputy Commissioner for Disease Control.

Also this week: the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the great icons of New York City, but has also become a battleground between walkers, joggers and cyclists. Just not enough room on the walking part of the bridge.

Now there is a proposal to do something everyone thought could not be done: expanding the Brooklyn Bridge to make it more accessible.

With us is New York City Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg to talk about the bridge and the continuing effort to save pedestrian lives in the biggest walking city in the country.
