His four legs may be short, but one Chihuahua is hiking hundreds of miles with his owner for a special cause.

His vet says he's a canine elite athlete. Hachi is a trail dog, but he's also a hospice therapy dog.

Hachi the Wonder Dog usually spends his days comforting and snuggling up to patients at Advanced Home Health Care and Hospice in Sacramento.

Over the next 25 days, owner Jeff Douglas and his 5-year-old, 16-pound furry companion will be on a 375-mile trek from Lake Tahoe to Point Reyes Sea Shore.

They are walking to bring awareness to hospice care.

Douglas said he hopes he and Hachi can "start important conversations about end-of-life planning" with people they meet while on their adventure.
