Man recovering after police in Queens shoot him in leg

Police shoot suspect in Jamaica, Queens

JAMAICA, Queens (WABC) -- A man shot in the leg by police in Queens on Friday night was stable at a Queens hospital Saturday.

At 9:20 p.m., in the Baisley Housing Development on Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, a plainclothes New York City Police Department lieutenant and police officer patrolling when they left a second-floor stairwell and encountered a man with a gun in his hand.

The police fired, striking the man once in the left leg. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital and is stable. The lieutenant and the police officer were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The man was identified as Jamel Ethridge, 38, who police said has an extensive arrest history that includes attempted murder and multiple arrests for criminal possession of a firearm.

A loaded 9mm firearm was recovered at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
