Officials: Retired NYPD detective shoots 2 in NJ robbery attempt

NEWARK, New Jersey -- Officials say a retired NYPD detective wounded two suspects who tried to rob her in Newark Thursday night.

Police say the 43-year-old, who retired nine months ago, was getting into her vehicle in Newark around 9:30 p.m. when she was approached by two men who brandished a gun and demanded money.

The detective opened fire, wounding 22-year-old Tahje Hunt and 27-year-old Brian Moore, who fled on foot. The Newark residents were apprehended and taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The men face robbery and other charges.

Police recovered a replica gun.

The retired detective's name was not released.
