Exclusive: Elderly mugging victim speaks out after attack in the Bronx

MORRIS HEIGHTS, Bronx (WABC) -- As police continue to search for suspects in the mugging of an elderly man in the Bronx, the victim is speaking exclusively to Eyewitness News.

The 83-year-old man says he tries to watch his back when he is out, but three men still attacked him right while he was walking home, in an assault captured on camera.

Even though there is a sign warning about cameras, the entire attack was captured on camera.

"I always be careful when I'm walking at night, if I see a crowd of two or three people young people, I cross over the other side of the street," the victim said.

The 83-year-old great-grandfather is cautious, but was broadsided around 9 p.m. Friday.

He only saw one man and seconds later he was on the ground taking kicks and punches.

"'Help, help, murder, murder,' but no one was coming up or coming down the street which is surprising to know that no one was coming," the victim said.

Living in fear, he doesn't want to show his face.

The brutal beating of was captured on video, showing how a first, then a second and third man join in on the attack.

"They grab the wallet and said, 'Come on let's go, let's go,'" he said.

"Cowards, because they attack him from behind," the victim's wife said.

The victim's wife was afraid this might happen.

Her husband walks home every night after family dominos a few blocks away.

"It upsets me and me now I'm afraid to go out now," she said.

The victim was taken to the hospital but had no serious injuries.

The victim has lived in their neighborhood for more than 30 years.

Now he's afraid to leave his home at night.

"I'm so glad that they didn't have any weapons a gun or a knife or something," she said.

"I was only thinking, I hope my life is spared," the victim said.

The men captured on camera got away with the victim's wallet, cash, credit cards and ID.

As the search is on for his attackers, the victim just wants answers.

"Why did they do it, what's the reason for that," he said.

The victim tells Eyewitness News he was taken to he hospital, where he was checked out. He will be okay, but he is definitely still shaken from what happened.

The NYPD describes the suspects as 5'6"-5'8" with a medium build. They were wearing dark-colored hoodies and light-colored sweatpants.
