WESTFIELD, New Jersey (WABC) -- For the freshman class at Westfield High, this was probably one of the hardest lessons yet - nothing is promised.

"I just feel like it's a dream," says Amanda Wagner.

Hundreds gathered Sunday evening with candles, their grief pouring out in tears as they begin to say goodbye to their classmate, 13-year-old Terry DiFalco.

The teen was crossing Central Avenue in Westfield on Saturday night around 8:30 when she was struck by an off-duty New Jersey State Trooper.

As flowers were laid at the scene of the accident Sunday, parents received the letter from the school principal about DiFalco's death.

The teen, heavily involved in the theater was set to have a part in the upcoming school musical, 'Carrie.'

On Sunday, DiFalco's friends remembered her.

"She was just a great person, she always smiled, she always made people's day better," said John Desena.

"She always had a smile on her face, no matter what was going on," added Mary Weber.

The emotion at the vigil showing just how many DiFalco touched. These students, parents and community are now leaning on each other for support.

"I just tell them it's going to be okay, sorry, it's going to be okay, I promise," said Wagner.

Grief counselors will be on hand Monday at Westfield High to help the students. As for the accident, the investigation continues. No charges have been filed.
