Dutchess County boy with cystic fibrosis gets dream vacation wish granted

HAWTHORNE, New York (WABC) -- A Dutchess County boy with cystic fibrosis is getting a much-needed vacation.

Eleven-year-old Evan Allgauer and his family are headed to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas provided by the Take a Breather Foundation.

The non-profit group has granted more than 100 wishes to children with cystic fibrosis.

It partnered with the Boston Children's Health Physicians in Hawthorne to grant Evan's wish.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited, chronic disease that affects the sweat and mucus glands in the body. it can affect many parts of the body, though most often the lungs, sinuses, digestive system, pancreas and sex organs.

Patients have unusually thick, sticky mucus, which can clog the lungs, leading to lung infections, and block enzymes in the pancreas from absorbing food correctly.

While there is no cure yet, treatment has dramatically improved over the last 20 years.
