MIDLAND BEACH, Staten Island (WABC) -- Two firefighters in Staten Island are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a man from a burning building.

On Monday morning, on Lincoln Avenue in Midland Beach, firefighters Ronald Mitchell and Michael Luongo went into an apartment and found a man hanging from a window.

According to the New York City Fire Department, Mitchell got behind the man to keep him calm, and Luongo secured the man in a basket and slid him down a ladder to a waiting ambulance.

The man is recovering in the hospital in serious condition.

FDNY members brought the fire under control with no further serious injuries.

The cause was later determined to be accidental. There was no working smoke alarm in the home.
