Bridgewater, New Jersey, wreck on Route 22 leaves 2 dead

BRIDGEWATER, New Jersey (WABC) -- Two pedestrians were fatally struck on westbound Route 22 by a car that then crashed through the parking lot of the Bridgewater Diner.

Around 3:15 a.m. Thursday, on Route 22 West near North Adamsville Road in Bridgewater, N.J., a 2004 Toyota Sienna driven by Xu Chengfei, 41, of Flushing, struck a man and a woman who were walking in the left lane.

The car then came to rest in a grassy area.

Both pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the vehicle was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital-Somerset for non-life threatening injuries.

The victims have been identified as 29-year-old Robert Gibbons and 23-year-old Magdalene Allen, both of East Brunswick.

All westbound lanes were closed on Route 22 closed from Interstate 287 North and Foothill/Ronson Road to Gaston Avenue, for the accident investigation.

The crash is being investigated by the Bridgewater Township Police Department and anyone with information on the case is asked to call 908-722-4111 ext 4154.
