KINGS PARK (WABC) -- On Long Island, two kayakers are safe on dry land thanks to some alert bystanders and police rescue teams.

Two people on the shore in Kings Park in Suffolk County saw a kayak overturn in the Long Island Sound around 3:30 Sunday afternoon.

Marine units from Smithtown Bay responded and found one man within about 20 minutes. It took nearly an hour to find the second man, who had drifted about a mile from the kayak.

The men were taken to the beach off Old Dock Road and transferred to waiting ambulances, where they were rushed to St. Catherine's Hospital for treated of cold exposure.

They are expected to survive.

Rough conditions and wind were believed to be the cause, but the investigation is ongoing.
