GREENWICH VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A step to preserve LGBTQ history was taken Sunday, as Senator Charles Schumer of New York announced that a million dollar grant is being awarded for the Stonewall Inn project.

The project, run by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, will tell the stories of the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Manhattan.

The tavern was the site of the uprising widely viewed as the start of the gay rights movement.

The money will come from Google's philanthropic arm.

The initiative is in conjunction with the National Park Foundation.
