Double dose of train troubles cause headaches for Penn Station commuters

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- A New Jersey Transit train with nearly 600 people on board was briefly disabled near the tunnel outside of Penn Station on Saturday afternoon.

The FDNY was on the scene after train #7240 was disabled around 4:45 p.m. due to overhead wire problems.

NJ Transit officials say the train was cleared around 5:13 p.m. No injuries were reported, but some riders vented their frustrations on social media:

Earlier in the day, an Amtrak train from Miami to New York came to a halt just as it was exiting the North River tunnel into Penn Station due to the power issues.

Officials do not believe the overhead wire problems are related to the work that is being done at Penn Station, but say Saturday's incidents would have been much worse if they occurred during the weekday rush hour.

Saturday's problems come after the first week of major repairs at Penn Station that are forcing commuter rail lines to cut back schedules.

The work is to go through the end of August.

Amtrak's chief operations officer called the first week of the summer-long track work a success.
