Shirleen Allicot reports on a fallen hero officer immortalized on the streets of Far Rockaway.

It's the day a hero officer was immortalized on the streets of Far Rockaway. Briar Place will now be known as Detective Randolph Holder way.

It's a moment of pride for the family of the slain officer.

"My son was a good disciplined guy, officer and a gentleman. He died doing what he did best," his father, Randolph Holder Sr., said.

Holder was shot and killed in the line of duty back in October 2015 near the East Harlem community he protected every day.

32-year-old Tyrone Howard, a drug dealer known on the street as "Peanut", was convicted in March in the shooting death of Holder.

Holder, 33, was shot when he and his partner approached Howard, who was on a stolen a bicycle, around 8:30 p.m. Oct. 20, 2015, prosecutors said.

Holder's partner, Omar Wallace, testified that he recognized Howard from a drug arrest a year earlier and approached him in a non-confrontational way. Howard jumped off the bike so fast Wallace thought he was going to run. But instead, he yanked a semi-automatic handgun from his sweatshirt and opened fire.

"For the first time we're able to honor Randy's memory physically back where it all started, at home. On this very block, Randy made his daily commute to serve the citizens of East Harlem," Deputy Inspector Erik Hernandez said.

Holder always wanted to be a police officer, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who served in their native Guyana.

Police Commissioner James O'Neil, joined by Mayor Bill de Blasio and 250 fellow officers, delivered an important message.

"As we move through the years maybe someday some young man or young girl will look up at that sign and tell them what a person Randolph Holder was and what a great job he did, and why he became a police officer," O'Neil said.
