5-year-old boy critical after being pulled from pool in Stamford

STAMFORD, Connecticut (WABC) -- A 5-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was pulled from a pool at a Connecticut sports complex where he was attending soccer camp.

The boy had been underwater for about three minutes at Chelsea Piers Connecticut in Stamford on Thursday.

Around 12:30, a lifeguard pulled the boy who was underwater in one of the complex's pools.

The lifeguard performed CPR until emergency crews arrived.

"This is one of the smaller pools," said Stamford Police Captain Richard Conklin. "It's about 36 by 22 foot and it's a rather shallow pool. It's only two and a half foot at its shallowest to about four foot at its deepest."

The boy was unconscious but breathing when medics arrived.

He was taken first to Stamford Hospital, but after suffering seizures was flown to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital.

The boy is from New Canaan. During rec time campers can use the pool, and police say there were other children in the water.

In a statement, Chelsea Piers says "Our principal concern is for the young boy's health. Our thoughts are with him and his family."

"It's just a terrible, terrible tragedy. It's every parent's nightmare," said Conklin.

Police do not suspect criminality or negligence.

They are in the early stages of the investigation and have not yet been able to question the lifeguard who pulled the boy from the water.
