NYC's first cream cheese shop opens in the East Village

EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- At Becky's Bites in the East Village, cream cheese isn't just for smearing across your morning bagel. Owner Becky Rosenthal is reimagining the way you eat cream cheese, making it the star in desserts.

Rosenthal says, "Becky's Bites is New York's first cream cheese shop."

The idea for the store came when Rosenthal had a late night craving for "just a bite" of something sweet. So, Rosenthal threw some ingredients together and the chocolate dip bites were born. They are are now a signature item at the shop.

"Then I started making them with different kinds of fillings and I realized I can take cream cheese as sort of a palette and take it in a million different directions and make any flavor with it," Rosenthal said.

Later when Rosenthal met her husband, they played around with different cream cheese combinations. They soon realized no one else made unique cream cheese desserts like the ones at Becky's Bites.

So what different cream cheese items can you nosh on at Becky's? There's the original "Chocolate Bites" which are different flavors of cream cheese covered in chocolate. Then there's "Tiny Tarts" and "Cookie "Wiches." The tarts are little cream cheese filled pies and the 'wiches are flavored cream cheese sandwiched between Tiny Tate's cookies. They also recreated the 90's kids snack "Dunkaroos" with their own iteration called "Beckaroos." Those are a cream cheese dip paired with graham crackers or Teddy Grahams for dipping.

If you're in the mood for just a bagel with cream cheese, they have that too, but with a twist. Among their different cream cheese flavors, Becky's Bites plays off of the classic bacon, egg and cheese bagel sandwich and mixes the ingredients up into a savory cream cheese.

Whether you're in the mood for something sweet or savory, you're bound to find something you like at Becky's. As the shop's website says, "You can call her Becky with the Good Bites!" The treats will run you around $4.00.
