HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (WABC) -- Police on Long Island are searching for the driver who struck and killed an 80-year-old woman Tuesday night and kept on going.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. at Washington Street and Nichols Court in Hempstead.

Authorities say the victim, identified by friends as Charlotte Ingraham, was crossing the street when she was hit, and the driver fled the scene.

Ingraham was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 11:15 p.m.

The car that left the scene was found by Hempstead police a short time later, parked on the street. It was impounded for a forensic investigation.

Friends described Ingraham as a lively woman who lived alone in an apartment building just around the corner from the scene. It is unclear why she was out walking at the time.

"It hurts, it really hurts, because her and my mother were so close," one friend said. "And for me to just come in and hear about this, it's not sitting well with me."

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
