Dogs rescued from storm drain in Pennsylvania

LOWER SOUTHAMPTON, Pennsylvania -- Two large dogs were rescued from a storm drain in Pennsylvania Friday night.

They were lifted out of a storm drain 14 feet below the ground.

It all started when Tom and Diane Ratka made the discovery just outside of their Lower Southampton home on Clover lane.

"I heard a dog barking, and I was like my neighbors don't have a dog," Tom said.

After looking around neither of them saw any dog until Tom moved his car.

"The closer I got to the car, I heard the barking with an echo, so of course I'm coming out here to move the car, and I look down and I see the eyes of the dogs shining up." Tom said.

They called for help and while EMS crews were on their way, "We kept them company, and told them help was on the way," Tom said.

And those crews did not waste any time.

Lower Southampton firefighter Ryan Brookes was the one sent down below.

"They were pretty terrified. They seemed to be down there for a while," Brookes said.

He too did his best to comfort the dogs while dangling on the way back up.

When Brookes was asked, did you say anything to them while you were getting hoisted up out. He said, "Hold on pup, that was it."

After they were pulled out, they were taken to Town and Country Kennel.

On Saturday, Liz Carpino of Town and Country Kennel said, "They're better this morning, resting comfortably. They were hungry and they ate a lot."

Officials said they didn't suspect any foul play.

Feasterville Fire Deputy Chief James Mckeon said, "We believe they may have gotten in an open pipe or something, just wandering."

And later today, Action News learned that the owners picked the dogs up from the Kennel and brought them home.
