EXCLUSIVE: Road rage victim who nearly died leaves hospital
BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A furniture deliveryman in Brooklyn was badly beaten with a bat a month ago, but on Friday afternoon, Daron James left Brookdale Hospital to recover from his traumatic brain injury in a rehabilitation facility.
At the time of the attack last month, his prognosis looked grim.
He was making a furniture delivery in East Flatbush when an angry motorist smashed his skull with a baseball bat. The case remains unsolved.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. Friday, September 8 on East 48th Street. Authorities say the 22-year-old James was involved in a dispute with an unidentified man over double parking.
Authorities say the altercation then turned physical, with the suspect striking the victim several times in the head with a baseball bat.
He spent a week in a coma and doctors said he had a fifty-fifty chance of surviving.
But he beat the odds, and on Friday he left Brookdale Hospital surrounded by doctors, nurses, police officers from the 67th Precinct, and his friends and family.
"I feel great, man!" he told us. "I am grateful to everyone who helped me make it this far."
The suspect was last seen driving a gray Honda Accord. He is described as a black male in his 40s, approximately 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds.
