'Diversion' robberies targeting elderly in New Jersey

BERGEN COUNTY, New Jersey (WABC) -- Officials in New Jersey are offering a warning after a series of burglaries in 12 towns.

Most of the burglaries are targeting elderly homeowners and involved a diversion. The ruse begins with someone knocking at the door, posing as a utility worker, a handy man and even a police officer while an accomplice robs the home.

The incidents have happened enough that local officials in Bergen County are taking action.
