JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A 15-year-old boy was killed and another seriously injured when a car hit the two while they were riding on a bicycle in Jersey City.

The incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on Terrace Ave. near Secaucus Rd.

The injured teen was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. He was hit with such force he was thrown over an overpass onto the highway below.

"The vehicle collided with a bicycle, we believe it to be only one bicycle," said Esther Suarez, Hudson County Prosecutor, "however we have two victims."

"You know my neighbors told me that there was a kid who was on the bike, and I saw the tent, and you know, and I saw an ambulance going away. I said, 'Are there any kids in the ambulance?' And he was like, 'Yeah, someone flew over the fence,' and I was like, 'Wow," a resident said.

A car was located nearby with serious front-end damage.

The driver and the passengers of the vehicle initially fled, however Jersey City police detained two of the three passengers. The driver and another passenger remains on the run.

"I see two young guys running up the block, and then I see two young females running up the block, but then they circle back," a resident said. "They weren't screaming, but they were just saying, 'It wasn't our fault.' And they were basically running away from the accident, which makes it a crime."

There is an active police investigation underway. So far, they have discovered clothes near the scene which they believe may be from the driver.

"Do you think of that as a dangerous traffic area?" Eyewitness News Reporter Jim Dolan asked.

"Very, very. They have no bike lanes, there are barely even any stop signs," a resident said.

The police say they know who the driver is, but they have not yet made any arrests.

The teen who was killed and the injured teen have not yet been identified.
