2nd girl dies after being pulled from water in Belmar

BELMAR, New Jersey (WABC) -- A second young girl who was pulled unconscious from the water off Belmar last week has died.

The girls had gone swimming last Thursday when no lifeguards were on duty.

Thirteen-year-old Mitzi Hernandez died that day. Her 12-year-old cousin, who had been on life-support, passed away Monday at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

"They're just sweet girls who are willing to help other children," Belmar schools Superintendent David R. Hallman said. "So it's just a difficult time right now."

Bouquets of flowers have been left on the boardwalk facing the beach where tragedy took place.
