4-alarm fire tears through Passaic apartments

Dozens forced out of apartments in Passaic fire
Dray Clark reports on an apartment building fire in Passaic.

PASSAIC, New Jersey (WABC) -- A four-alarm fire that burned through an apartment building in Passaic Thursday morning was brought under control by 5 a.m.

The fire broke out on the first floor of the Gregory Avenue building just before 2 a.m. The family living on the first floor evacuated, with help from police officers.

Heavy smoke spread throughout the five-story building.

"Each apartment has to be checked" before residents are allowed to return to their home, Passaic Mayor Hector Lora," . They are being temporarily housed at Passaic City Hall.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition at the hospital. Approximately 120 people were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
