East Northport fire claims life of elderly woman

Homicide detectives and the arson squad are investigating a deadly fire on Long Island.

The flames broke out on Grover Lane in East Northport around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Assistant fire chief Daniel Hefferman, who lives nearby, rushed into heavy smoke within two minutes. He and fire Chief Joseph Ervin found the body of 93-year-old Alice Woods in the doorway of her second-floor bedroom.

Suffolk County investigators say it appears the fire started in that bedroom.

No one else was in the house at the time.

Authorities say the fire does not appear suspicious.
