Con Edison fixes exposed wire situation in Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A live electrical wire that was exposed in a neighborhood in Brooklyn for months is now fixed.

A Con Edison crew on Macdounough Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant spent the day Wednesday fixing the exposed wire, which was more than 30 feet long.

Residents say they had been calling Con Ed for months to fix the dangerous problem, which was in the path of pets and neighbors alike.

The utility says it was caused by storm damage, reiterating that safety is the number one concern, but did not give an explanation about why it took so long to fix.

Sultan Malik, a nearby resident, said she was she scared of them and kept expecting an explosion of some kind. Her mother has inadvertently driven over the wires while parking her car.

Beyond safety concerns, the power has gone out at least three times nearby because the exposed cables were damaged.

"My refrigerator was out for 10 hours," resident Beverly McDonald said. "Of course it's not safe."

The immediate concern was safety. Neighbors put up a warning sign, but there was no similar sign from Con Ed, only barricades that the neighbors didn't like on their tree-lined, manicured street.

"It's very ugly," said one woman who did not want to be identified. "It's not good."
