MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Hundreds of people evacuated a building in Midtown due to a gas leak.

It happened at 498 7th Avenue at West 37th Street around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Con Edison responded to the scene where they were able to isolate and eventually shut off the valve.

The utility hopes to have gas restored to the building by Friday morning.

There are no reports of injuries at this time.

Some 400-500 people self-evacuated from the building. Hours later, management and maintenance staff were allowed back inside the building.
