Cuomo signs law lowering New York City speed limit to 25

NEW YORK -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation to lower New York City's speed limit to 25 mph.

Cuomo signed the law in Manhattan on Saturday. He was flanked by two traffic signs that read "Speed Limit 25" - down from the current 30.

The new limit goes into effect in three months.

The legislation is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's "Vision Zero" plan to try to end traffic deaths in the city.

The governor told an audience that included families of New Yorkers who died on city streets that a reduction of even 5 mph translates into about half as many deaths. Cuomo said last year's 176 deaths are a frightening statistic. He said it amounts to a "crisis."
