Get a speeding ticket in Nassau? Because of new speed cams, it might not count

MINEOLA, N.Y. (WABC) -- Nearly 40,000 speed-camera tickets have been issued in Nassau County so far this summer and none of them count. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano is declaring amnesty for all speed-camera tickets issued in Nassau this summer.

Doreen Delach is glad it's happening, because she got 11 speeding tickets in a school zone in Bethpage. Delach presumed there was no school, and she was doing the regular speed limit - under 40 miles per hour, and not 25 miles per hour.

"We didn't even have a chance to call up and find out what was going on, because they just kept coming in the mail day after day," Delach adds.

Delach wasn't the only one - it seems that a new program in Nassau County utilizing cameras for speeding in school zones had a few kinks. In some cases, residents were not properly informed there was indeed summer school.

Other towns where speed cameras were include Elmont, North Merrick, Bethpage, Levittown, Hicksville and Hempstead.

"I was not happy with the report I received from the vendor with respect to errors," says Mangano.

Errors, meaning tickets were issued at incorrect times, and not the posted ones. Nassau County issued more than 30,000 valid tickets, but another 9,800 were not valid ones. The total in fines is nearly $2.5 million.

"I do feel something good came out of this," Delach adds.

Nassau County will begin a full-scale roll out of this program after Labor Day and read the signs. The rules apply an hour before and after school until September.
