An Oceanside woman is charged with stabbing her mother to death

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police on Tuesday identified the elderly woman who was fatally stabbed inside her Long Island home, and they announced that her daughter is the one in custody and charged with her murder.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. Monday, when officers responded to a home on Terrell Avenue in Oceanside for an assault call. Upon arrival, they discovered 79-year-old Irma Grossman with a neck wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 2:55 p.m. by hospital staff.

Her daughter, 56-year-old Suzan Grossman-Kerner, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. Authorities say the daughter became enraged for some reason and attacked her mother.

Suzan Grossman-Kerner was arrested in connection with murder of Irma Grossman.

Neighbors reported hearing blood-curdling screams.

Deirdre Panzarella's mother lives next door.

"My mom's doing OK, she's just shook up," Panzarella said. "That's her neighbor. She's known this woman for many years, and it's kind of tough on her. We all know her, you know, sorry."

As detectives searched for evidence in the case, neighbors mourned the loss of a woman who was always there for others.

"She used to come over and see if my mom was OK," another neighbor said. "They were close, and she was there when my father passed away."

The investigation is ongoing.
