Ex-CT EMS coordinator accused of unauthorized procedures, photographing nursing students

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (WABC) -- A man who once served as the EMS coordinator at Bridgeport Hospital is now facing sexual assault and voyeurism charges after police say he performed unauthorized medical procedures on nursing students and also secretly photographed their genitals in the process.

Barry Barkinsky, who was also a nursing school teacher at the hospital, was arrested after an investigation that began in December.

"For 14 counts," Bridgeport police spokesperson Av Harris said. "Ten of those counts are for voyeurism and four counts of second-degree sexual assault."

Authorities say a man who enrolled in his class at the school came forward to say Barkinsky, of Stamford, had offered to help him with back problems with chiropractic treatments at the school. But he claimed Barkisky also examined his genitals while he was lying on a table and secretly took pictures.

Police say a search of Barkinsky's home uncovered more than 2,000 pictures, fetish props and videos. As a result of the investigation, three other victims have also been identified.

"The victims, we are alleging are male nursing students at the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing," Harris said.

Bridgeport Hospital says Barkinsky has been fired and that none of the victims were patients of the hospital.

Barkinsky is out of jail on a $100,000 bond.

Bridgeport Hospital released the following statement:

"In January Bridgeport Hospital was informed of a police investigation involving one of its employees. The employee, who did not work in any patient care areas, is no longer with the hospital. He was the EMS coordinator and as such did not have any authority to conduct patient care and we have no record that he provided any treatment at Bridgeport Hospital. The hospital had no knowledge of any of the activities alleged in the arrest warrant and, such alleged activity, if proven to be true, is an absolutely inexcusable violation of trust and inconsistent with the values of our organization. The hospital has been and will continue to cooperate fully with the police in this matter."
