Exclusive: Husband speaks out after wife shot while boarding bus in Brooklyn

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A 57-year-old woman was hit in the face by a stray bullet while at a bus stop in Brooklyn Thursday.

The incident happened near the intersection of Mermaid Avenue and West 33rd Street in Coney Island, where the gunfire rang out just before 7:30 p.m.

Authorities say gunmen in two cars apparently began firing at each other, and one of the bullets struck Larisa Lyubina in the cheek as she was boarding the bus. But she didn't call 911. Instead, she called her husband, because she thought she was dying. He spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News.

"The guys stopped the car, and started to shoot one another," he said. "She said, 'Somebody shot me and I have damage in my face. I don't want to die.'"

The victim was taken to Lutheran Medical Center in stable condition. The bullet reportedly struck Lyubina in the chin on the left side of her face, breaking a bone above her chin. It remains lodged in her face, and surgeons will have to operate to remove it.

The men escaped in separate cars, neither of them apparently hurt. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, but residents say violence is becoming commonplace.
