ARVERNE (WABC) -- Two people are in custody after a 12-year old girl was shot and wounded in Queens Saturday.

11-year-old Dekarai Roberts heard one shot and hit the floor, only to look up and find his 12-year-old classmate was shot in the leg.

"I just heard a gunshot and then I saw her blood coming out of her legs," says Roberts.

Roberts and dozens of other children were enjoying Youth Day and a basketball tournament at the Averne View Apartment Complex at 106 Beach 59th Street in the Averne section of Queens.

One witness, who goes by the name "Bang Money" said the girl was calm, and they wrapped a shirt around her leg.

"I just seen people running, everybody was running trying to get cover," said another witness, Linnette Mitchem, "the kids were crying, it was really sad."

The 12-year-old is currently in stable condition at Long Island Jewish Hospital.

Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene.
