BROOKLYN, New York (WABC) -- Police say the husband of a 45-year-old woman surrendered to authorities after she was found dead with her throat cut in Brooklyn early Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Karen Ashley, and her husband, 55-year-old Beres Ford Ashley, is now charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police responded to a 911 call on Blake Avenue around midnight, where they found Karen Ashley unconscious in the driver's seat of a gold 2004 Nissan Maxima. She had sustained multiple knife wounds to her throat and some to her body, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the husband and the woman were believed to have been in the car at the time of the attack, and Beres Ashley reported had a laceration on his hand when he surrendered. He was taken to Methodist hospital for treatment.

A witness observed the husband leaving the vehicle shortly before his wife was found, and detectives are investigating whether there is some type of separation or estrangement between the two. They no longer live together.

The investigation is ongoing.
