BRONX (WABC) -- A 68-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman who were innocent bystanders were wounded when gunfire rang out in the Bronx Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 2:30 p.m. on West Burnside Avenue in the University Heights section.

The man, identified as Juan Sierra, was struck six times in the right shoulder and right leg, while the woman, Lorima Blanco, was shot in the buttocks.

"He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," daughter Silvia Serrano said.

Authorities say a gunman chasing and firing at another man instead hit Sierra and Blanco.

She ran into a deli for help, but Sierra collapsed. Now, he's fighting for his life.

Sierra is a retired factory worker who usually picks up his granddaughter from school at that time. Instead, he went to the supermarket and unwittingly ran into a barrage of gunfire.

Both were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where Blanco was treated and released. Sierra remains hospitalized but is expected to survive.

The suspect fled in a Dodge Charger.

On West Burnside Avenue, the aftermath was visible Friday. There was a shot-out store window, and shopkeepers were cleaning the sidewalk of blood. And police maintained a presence.

The investigation is ongoing.
