Investigation into police shooting in Brooklyn
N.J. Burkett has the latest on a man shot and killed after police say he lunged at an officer with a knife.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WABC) -- Authorities are investigating a police involved shooting Monday night in which one man was shot dead by police in a Kensington, Brooklyn home and another was fatally injured.

According to police, around 7:30 they responded to a dispute at 820 Ocean Parkway. Inside the apartment, police said they found a 47-year-old man armed with two knives. When he refused to drop the weapons, officers fired at him.

Police say Francisco Carjaval was using a knife to hack through the door of a bathroom, where his ex-girlfriend, 35-year old Kathy Russo, and her two children were hiding.

51-year old Rafael Laureano helped police break down the door of the apartment.

Police say he then barged toward Carjaval to try and disarm him, and officers couldn't hold him back.

When Carvajal allegedly lunged at officers with the knife, police opened fire.

Three officers fired a dozen shots, and both men were mortally wounded.

It was not immediately clear whether Laureano had been shot to death by police, or stabbed to death by the suspect. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Russo, who lived in the apartment, had been locked in the bathroom with her two children, hiding as the suspect tried to get in. Police were seen carrying two young children, ages 6 and 7 from the home.

"It was absolute chaos," said Simon Gifter, a resident. "The children looked stunned. They were not crying; they just looked stunned."

The relationship among the three people is unclear.

"It's a very safe neighborhood, it's shocking for this neighborhood," Gifter said.

Three officers were treated at Maimonides Hospital for tinnitus.
