Man arrested in shooting that ended with New York highway U-Haul escape

MAMARONECK, Westchester County (WABC) -- Police have arrested a man in a connection with a bizarre incident on a New York highway that included a man jumping from a moving U-Haul after being shot several times.

It happened just before 6 p.m. last Tuesday on I-95 in Mamaroneck, and now, 55-year-old Jamil Fields, of the Bronx, is charged with attempted murder and assault.

State police responded to a reported motor vehicle collision between exits 18B and 19, and arriving troopers found 24-year-old Mouhamed Cisse suffering serious injuries.

The victim was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

During the course of the investigation, police say they developed Fields as a suspect. While conducting follow up interviews in the Bronx, they say Fields was observed operating a U-Haul van on Nereid Avenue. The investigators followed the van and subsequently located Fields and the van on Richardson Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

The incident remains under investigation. The circumstances of the incident have not been released, though authorities said it is unclear if the victim exited on his own or was pushed.
