Man charged after police-involved shooting in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens

PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A man hit in a police-involved shooting on Sunday has been charged.

Paul Mathurin, 31, was charged with drug and weapon possession, reckless endangerment and menacing.

According to the New York City Police Department, Mathurin was shot after menacing motorists with a gun at Lefferts and Rogers avenues in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday.

Two NYPD officers responded to the area, and identified themselves, ordering him not to move, said NYPD Assistant Chief Steven Powers.

Police said he refused and yelled incoherently.

Mathurin turned toward the officers, and three officers fired a total of 12 shots at him after ordering him to drop his 9-mm handgun, officials said.

Mathurin was struck once in the hip and taken to Kings County Hospital where he was stable.

The officers were treated and released after being checked at an area hospital. Police say the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.
