Fire in Mattituck on North Fork of Long Island leaves man dead

MATTITUCK, N.Y. (WABC) -- A 51-year-old man died in a fire that destroyed a commercial building on Route 25 in Mattituck.

The fire started just before 11 p.m. Friday. Fire departments from Mattituck, Cutchogue, Southold, Greenport, East Marion and Jamesport responded to the scene while other North Fork departments were on stand-by.

The building included the office for Liberty Data Systems and several other small businesses as well as a small apartment at the rear of the building where the victim had lived.

The Suffolk County Police Arson Squad is assisting in the investigation. Authorities have not released the name of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
