Man wanted for stabbing with screwdriver on Staten Island

TOTTENVILLE (WABC) -- Police on Staten Island are trying to find the person who attacked a man with a screwdriver.

They released a photo of the suspect, 34-year old John Matthews.

According to police, Matthews became involved in a dispute with a female in front of 4 Sneden Avenue at about 3:30 Friday morning.

The dispute became physical and police say Matthews began to choke and hit the woman.

A 36-year-old man observed the assault, stopped his car, and attempted to aid the woman.

Matthews allegedly removed a screwdriver from his pants pocket and stabbed the man several times in the back, then fled the scene.

The victim was taken to Staten Island North Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The woman refused medical attention at the scene.

Matthews is described as a white male, 5'11" tall weighing 160 pounds.

He was last seen driving a 2003 four-door burgundy Lexus G3300. The vehicle was bearing New York State Plate number GPZ-0111 but there is a possibility that he changed the plates.

The suspect is known to frequent New Jersey and Arizona.
