Mom walking with 4-year-old daughter stabbed, allegedly by panhandler, in Stamford

STAMFORD (WABC) -- Police are searching for a panhandler they believe slashed a mother who was walking with her child in Connecticut Saturday evening.

The incident happened on Myrtle Avenue near the I-95 overpass in Stamford around 8:30 p.m., where the victim was walking with her 4-year-old daughter.

The girl, thankfully, was uninjured.

Authorities say the suspect asked the woman for money and then attacked her after she said no and started to walk away.

She told police that she felt a pinch, but didn't realize she had been stabbed until she returned home to her apartment. That's when she realized she needed help and called 911.

The victim suffered a 4-inch deep stab wound and was hospitalized overnight for observation. She is expected to be OK.

The suspect is said to be known to area residents, and police confirm they have an idea of who they are looking for. So far, no arrests have been made.
