NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- A taxi driver found driving around New York City wearing a Nazi armband was suspended.

The Taxi and Limousine Commissioner took away 27-year old Gabriel Diaz's license for 30 days, after he pleaded guilty to violating the rules.

Complaints started coming into the Anti-Defamation League two months ago from people who saw him wearing the swastika.

The ADL says the punishment sends a powerful message that such a demonstration of hate while on the job is unacceptable.

Diaz told the New York Daily News he believes in the "ideology of National Socialism" and will continue to show off the Nazi symbol when he's not at work.

Diaz told the newspaper: "If a Muslim can drive a cab wearing a turban, if a homosexual can walk around with a big rainbow flag, why can't a person like me wear a Nazi armband?"
