May 8, 2014 (WABC) -- How long does it take before the world notices atrocity and then takes action? Humanity has a long history of turning a blind eye towards evil, before it starts fighting.

I've been thinking about that the history of inaction as the world suddenly opens its eyes to the horror of what's happening in Nigeria. Hundreds of girls, kidnapped for well, for terrible things. Now social media is helping spread the word. #RealMenDon'tBuyGirls is "trending" as they say, with celebrities such as Sean Penn, Justin Timberlake, Ashton Kutcher and Jamie Foxx holding up signs, in protest of what's going on with an Islamist group that is, indeed, kidnapping and selling girls.

Earlier this week we saw Michelle Obama holding up a similar sign, saying #BringBackOurGirls. The "Boko Haram" militants in Nigeria probably could care less that the "girls" sign was tweeted more than 1.6 million times, but whatever it takes to get these kids back, right? And that includes dozens of U.S. personnel heading to Nigeria to help out.

The whole world is indeed watching. Here's the link to the latest campaign: http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-27328414?ocid=socialflow_twitter

Tonight at 11, we'll have the latest on the Nigerian horror.

Also at 11, a serial subway hammer attacker is on the loose. The latest victim - - a 32-year-old man who was buying a MetroCard at a station in Brooklyn yesterday when a guy hit him in the head from behind with a hammer, and demanded his money. This is, say cops, the third similar attack recently. And people are, understandably, nervous. I ride the subway, and it makes me nervous too.

We'll have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
