An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing at Kennedy Airport after a bird strike Tuesday

QUEENS, N.Y. (WABC) -- An American Airlines flight returned to Kennedy airport after striking a bird.

According to the Federal Flight Administration, American Airlines 1320, a Boeing 757 aircraft, struck a flock of birds as it left John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 8:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The pilot radioed to turn back to Kennedy about 10 minutes after taking off. The flight landed safely after the pilot declared an emergency, the FAA said. It had been headed to Cyril E. King airport in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The flight returned to Kennedy and landed safely with no injuries. The FAA is investigating.

The 135 passengers will be put on another plane.
