IRVINGTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- Two suspects wanted for stealing tires and rims in Newark were chased by police into Irvington Wednesday morning.

The two masked men were wanted after tires from vehicles, mostly Hondas, were stolen in Newark's Ironbound district.

The men, in a pickup truck, were chased by Newark police on Routes 1/9 and Interstate 78 into Irvington, where they were boxed in on a local street.

Police said they jumped out of their pickup truck at Nye Avenue and Howard Street, and fled on foot.

One person was quickly detained by police. Officers were on foot searching for a second suspect.

According to police, many tires and rims were discovered in the ditched pickup truck, which also was stolen in Newark overnight.

The thefts had recently been connected in a robbery pattern as part of one of Newark's new crime initiatives.
