Arrest made in Bronx hit and run that left 50-year-old woman injured

BRONX, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police have arrested a driver they say left a woman in critical condition after a hit and run accident in the Bronx last week.

Around 1:07 p.m. on Monday, August 18, a group of people were crossing Bruckner Boulevard westbound at East 138th Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

The group got into an argument with the driver of a white Chevy Impala traveling northbound on Bruckner.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Alex Hernandez, then made a U-turn at 138th Street, striking a 50-year-old woman on the southbound side. Christina Aybar was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center in critical condition and remains hospitalized.

Witnesses say Aybar pushed a man out of the way as the car was approaching.

"She's a good person," said Ada Tavares, who witnessed the incident. "She took care of her kids. She did anything for anybody. You needed a hand she was there."

Witnesses said she was a victim of road rage -- an enraged driver who gunned for the pedestrian.

"What kind of animal is that?" witness Evelyn Ramos asked. "That's not a human being. I'm upset. I'm angry."

Police released surveillance video of the car they were looking for, which led them to Hernandez.

"Whoever did it was a dirty person that don't care that that person got a family, got kids," witness Julio Carrillo said.

Hernandez is charged with vehicular assault, failure to notify a motor vehicle accident with injury and failure to report a motor vehicle accident
