JERSEY CITY, N.J. (WABC) -- Investigators in New Jersey are looking for answers into what killed a mother and her young son.

The pair was found unconscious in their Jersey City apartment Wednesday night.

Authorities are trying to figure out what happened in the second floor apartment in the multi-family home on Lincoln Street.

The case has left many in the neighborhood puzzled.

Police found the mother in her 20's and her 5-year old son inside the apartment.

They were pronounced dead at Christ Hospital a short time later.

Police say the woman's brother-in-law found the two, but have not said whether the mother and child lived there alone. Police are not saying who made the 911 call.

Air quality tests conducted by the fire department have come back negative for carbon monoxide.

Neighbors describe a chaotic scene, but said they never heard or saw anything unusual coming out of the home, so the deaths remain a mystery to them.

"You never know somebody, you just see them walking by, passing by alweays looking happy. You don't know what's going on inside their house," said neighbor Prince Permadul.

"They had a stretcher out here, me and my wife just left because we didn't want to see something like that, it's hard to get that stuff out of your head," said another neighbor.

Police have not yet identified the victims.

The Hudson Country Prosecutor's Office is investigating.
